Whilst Halon contains Ozone Depleting Substances (ODP), current legislation does not require you to replace your existing Halon system. However availability of Halon 1301 in its pure and original state is almost non existent and replacement supplies can be very difficult to source. Permission to replace a discharged system must be obtained in writing from the Halon Bank of South Africa.
Most companies have in the last few years replaced their Halon Systems and have chosen either Halo-Carbons or Inert Gas Systems as a substitute. Recently a new approved gas called NAFS125 has been made available with characteristics similar to Halon 1301and it is now possible that existing Halon 1301 hardware can be retained. |
